Keeping your skin out of harm’s way isn’t as easy as coating your face in SPF before a day in the sun or loading up on serums and moisturizers before bed. With only nine chemicals banned from cosmetics use in the United States, beauty product manufacturers have mostly free rein when it comes to adding harmful ingredients to their recipes.
Here’s La Bloom Beauty’s list of top six ingredients to eliminate from your beauty routine:
Sulfates: The lathery sensation from soap and shampoo is all due to the addition of sulfates, which act as cleansing agents to remove dirt and oil from hair and skin. Doesn’t sound too bad, right? Here’s the thing: If you’re a hair dye fanatic, sulfates will prematurely strip dye you’re your hair. They are also harsh irritants to eyes and skin.
For a healthier cleanse, opt for sulfate-free cleansers and shampoo—available at all price points, for all hair types. Here’s our favorite!
Silicone: According to Healthline, silicones are a group of semi-liquid substances that form a film-like coating on the skin. Silicones have been medically proven to help heal traumatic wounds and scarring but offer no benefits to skin outside of burn units. Their water-repelling nature makes them difficult to wash off of your face and body, trapping dirt and oil, and igniting acne breakouts. Plus, they’re extremely harmful to the environment because of their bioaccumulative properties. When silicone-based products are rinsed down the drain, they may not break down for hundreds of years—aiding buildup of pollution in waterways.
Skip the silicone! Try La Bloom Beauty’s Bloom Face Mist to keep your skin refreshed and glowing all day long.
Parabens: The Environmental Working Group (EWG) states that there is strong evidence to show that parabens, or artificial preservatives, act as estrogen when absorbed into the body. Parabens are natural hormone disruptors, found in both leave-in and rinse-off products, and affect how normal hormone systems function in the body—especially in women. Women with high levels of paraben in their system may suffer from reproductive problems such as fertility issues and birth outcomes. In fact, Parabens cause so much disruption, that they are currently banned from cosmetic use in the EU, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and Japan.
La Bloom Beauty has banned parabens from the start. Check out our collection!
Phthalates: Phthalates are commonly found in lipsticks, perfume, and lotions. These chemicals act as hormones and interfere with male genital development (watch out pregnant mamas!) while increasing risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Though it’s difficult to avoid phthalates all together, keeping this harsh ingredient out of your beauty routine, especially while pregnant, is a good call. A study showed that children whose mothers were exposed to phthalates during pregnancy were likely to have problems with motor skills and language development.

Dyes: There is likely nothing natural about the color of your skincare products. The pretty hues of your skincare products are thanks to the addition of artificial dyes. Dyes can fly under the radar as harmful but are linked to ADHD, skin irritation, and in select individuals, may cause the same reactions as food allergies. Only seven artificial dyes remain on the FDA’s approved list due to a majority of artificial dyes linked to carcinogenic properties (cancer), anxiety, migraines, and hyperactivity in children.

Mineral oil: There are plenty of valuable oil-based skincare products out there but mineral oil is not one of them. Mineral oil is commonly found on the no-no list of clean beauty ingredients because it is a strong toxin of the immune and respiratory system, has an impaired capacity to fight disease and repair damaged body tissue, and is extremely poisonous if ingested.
